8 Things to Consider When Buying a 2nd Hand EKS
Undoubtedly, Electric kick scooter’s price range is very wide making it challenging for buyers that are buying 2nd hand units if it is best for them. The initial question of first time 2nd hand buyers are “How much does that unit cost”
When a first timer asks this question, they just unknowingly handed a knife to the person whom they asked the question, unless they do know the fair market price, damages and the price of upgrades (if there’s any)
The question kills them and rips their head off (okay, maybe not that graphic but you get what I’m saying).
In order not to get your head ripped off. Start taking down notes on these 8 points
Full charge of volts gives you a glimpse on how the previous user a.) takes care of the batteries b.) their charging habits and the c.) manufacturing date of the battery. While these 3 gives you a great overview at the current status of the battery,
How to do this? First, go to the trip meter on your dashboard and reset it to 0.0km. Second, charge the batteries up to its maximum voltage. Finally, ride your unit just like how you normally would go where you need to be and use it without consciously thinking that you’re on a range test.
Save around 1 or 2 volts before your cutoff voltage so that you won’t have to walk home
It doesn’t matter if it takes you 3 days or more to consume the battery up to 10%. What’s important is you know the range that your unit is capable of compared to a brand-new battery.
(This test will require speed does require the rider to wear safety gears and ample space) When trying your unit, hold the throttle for around a minute. A healthy voltage sag for single hub electric kick scooters is 6v and 3v for dual hub electric kick scooters
If your unit exceeds those numbers, you might want to reconsider the healthiness of the batteries
NOTE: Don’t do both this test and the previous test on one charge. The voltage sag test consumes a lot of the battery’s juice. Do the voltage sag test first, during the test ride, then charge the unit. Finally, the range test.
As a 2nd hand unit owner. You can’t take away the probability that there have been damages to the unit from the previous owner. It is your responsibility to know if those damages exist and if it has been resolved by the previous owner.
Some sellers don’t disclose all the problems, we hate those people, but we can’t deny the fact that they do exist. All that you can control is your actions. Be fully aware and know the damages (if any) in your prospect unit.
Since you’re buying a 2nd hand unit, chances are high that the previous owner gets an upgrade may it be a minor or major upgrade for the unit. It is best to clarify what specific accessories you’re getting or if there’s any, for the unit you’re about to receive.
A seller might be selling his/her old electric kick scooter for the reasons for buying a higher performing unit. The seller may opt not to sell his/her front lights and use it for the next unit.
There’s nothing wrong for asking what the exact inclusions are you’re about to get and that’s why you should start asking the inclusions.
Yes, middlemen do exist. There’s nothing wrong to be introduced by a middleman, in fact, they’re a great help for increasing your network for buying 2nd hand units. What’s wrong is you as a buyer not talking to the owner of the actual unit. What’s wrong with that you ask?
Not talking the owner of the unit will give you shallow answers to the questions we’ve just talked about. Sure, the middleman can give you answers to those questions, but they can’t give you the exact answers by heart and by soul just like the owner of the unit.
Talking to the actual owners gives you a glimpse of the person who held the unit your about to own, you will hear the story of their unbreakable relationship and the battle scars that they’ve been through. Only you can feel this if you talk to the actual owner.
Not only you should start asking the right questions, but you should also ask the right person.
If the unit you’re about to buy is new (maybe weeks or a month old). Chances are high that the unit your about to buy has a warranty with it.
Confirm with the unit owner and with the shop about the existence of the warranty.
If the unit you're buying doesn’t have a warranty, you may try to ask for a personal warranty to the seller in case anything happens that is caused by previous damage.
Just ask and you might receive it.
How many owners have previously owned the unit that you’re about to buy?
Having an answer to this question will give you an overview of when the unit was purchased, parts that are about to be replaced due to wear and tear, and the general condition of the unit because newer units are better (generally speaking).
But is not always the case, there are also sellers that are very protective of their electric kick scooters and treat them as their own children. Be careful and choose a seller that takes care of the unit and has a good reputation.
There’s no doubt that every electric kick scooter must have brakes. Therefore, you must genuinely inspect, and test ride the unit you’re buying to know the status of the brakes and its performance.
You should not miss this step when buying a 2nd hand unit.
Aside from the integral electronics and hinges of the electric kick scooter, the brake is another part that you can objectively measure the performance so be sure to check everything especially the brakes.
TIP: If you’re buying an electric kick scooter that goes 60kph and above and you know that you. Be sure that the brakes have great braking performance so that you won’t hurl yourself forward during a sudden braking incident
Suspension helps you traverse through uneven and harsh roads by absorbing the impact and minimizing the transfer of vibration to your body and electric kick scooter. Thus, lessening stress and fatigue. Knowing your usual route is step before considering what electric kick scooter to buy as it can affect your buying decision specially on suspension.
Spring type suspension, air suspension and c-type suspension have no deterioration at all, making it difficult to measure because they don’t sag slowly, its either they’re performing well, or they should be replaced immediately.
PU rods on the other hand do sag and deteriorate as time goes by. In order to prevent further damage. You’ll know how to measure the suspension in a bit.
TIP: Not all small electric kick scooters have suspension, mid-range and high-end electric kick scooters do have suspension. In case you’re buying a small 2nd hand electric kick scooter, do your research first and know if the unit you’re buying has a suspension.
Here are 3 tests that you can do to test the unit’s suspension
Screen captured from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJGqI9IDa4s
In this test, you stand on the electric kick scooter and then jump normally. Other people on the internet jump excessively, while the scooter can absorb the impact, we don’t want to do this because it’s not realistic.
During this test, the deck of the electric kick scooter should not hit the ground. This test simulates the unit’s suspension ability on uneven roads and unwanted pothole cruising

In this test, you stand on the electric kick scooter plus the normal things/items that you would bring to your usual destination. Although weight limit is stated to most electric kick scooters, you would want to do this test because you’re buying a 2nd hand unit and would love the best quality possible
A healthy suspension does not sag too much from the initial time you stood up on the electric kick scooter

In this test, you would ride the electric kick scooter around your vicinity to see it can handle the speed and road with you riding on it.
You can say that the suspension is great based on its performance. The performance varies greatly from the type of suspension, the road you’re riding, your weight, speed, etc. Do your research on the unit you’re buying and test the suspension
PU rods are a little bit different because it is the only suspension that deteriorates. No worries at all because you can still measure it suspension level by doing this:
You can measure its height by the number of fingers in one hand. More fingers between the wheel and the stem, the better the quality of the suspension.
To do this, open your hand like you’re about to do a handshake and then close the gaps between your fingers. Now you like you’re about to do a stiff handshake or slap someone in the face. That my friend is how you can measure the quality of a PU rod suspension. Your hand should look something (but not exactly) like this.
Generally speaking, newer units are better but don’t be fooled. You never know how the previous owner uses and takes care of the electric kick scooter. Unless there are witnesses and the unit can speak for itself that its condition is well and good.
Electric kick scooters are emerging, and the need arises during times of need. Do not decide too fast and take your time to do research about your needs, wants and the unit you’re targeting to buy.
When buying an electric kick scooter, you’re not just buying a toy. This will be your mode of transportation wherever you go. You’re saving up time, money, and the planet. Be careful on your decisions and we hope you get the electric kick scooter that is best for you
